Flying Into the Himalayas

Everything you need to know about  travelling safely into Nepal’s remote Himalayan regions.

Flying into the Himalayas is an unforgettable part of any Nepal trekking adventure. For many treks in the Everest region - including Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, Island Peak, and Lobuche East - the journey begins with a mountain flight to Lukla, one of the world’s most famous high-altitude airports.

While these flights offer spectacular views across the Himalayas and provide access to some of Nepal’s most remote trekking regions, they are also heavily dependent on mountain weather conditions. Understanding how these flights operate and the possibility of delays is an important part of planning any Himalayan adventure.

FLYING TO LUKLA

Nearly every Everest region trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla - a small mountain airstrip located at an altitude of approximately 2,860 metres (9,400 ft). Lukla serves as the main gateway to the Everest region and is the primary access point for treks such as Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Ri, Island Peak, and Lobuche East.

The flight itself is short, typically lasting around 30–45 minutes from Kathmandu, or approximately 12 minutes from Ramechhap airport when alternative routing is required. Despite the short duration, the journey offers incredible aerial views of Nepal’s mountain valleys, terraced hillsides, and Himalayan peaks.

In some cases, flights may operate via Ramechhap Airport instead of Kathmandu. This requires an early morning road transfer of approximately five hours before boarding the flight to Lukla.

WEATHER & FLIGHT DELAYS

Due to its location high in the mountains, weather conditions around Lukla can change rapidly. Visibility, cloud cover, wind, and mountain weather systems all play a major role in determining whether flights can operate safely.

Lukla’s runway is short and positioned on the edge of a steep mountainside, making it one of the most challenging airports in the world for pilots. Airlines operating in the region prioritise safety and will delay, return, or cancel flights if weather conditions are not suitable for landing.

Flight delays are extremely common in the Everest region and should be expected as part of travelling in the Himalayas. Delays may last only a few hours, but in some cases can extend to several days depending on weather patterns.

For this reason, we strongly recommend building extra flexibility into your travel plans, particularly at the end of your trip, to allow for possible delays returning from Lukla.

HELICOPTER TRANSFERS

Helicopter transfers offer a more flexible alternative to fixed-wing flights when travelling to and from Lukla. Due to their ability to navigate changing weather conditions more effectively, helicopters can sometimes operate in conditions where small aircraft are unable to fly.

In certain situations, it may be possible to upgrade or switch to a helicopter transfer if flights are delayed.

However, this option is subject to availability, weather conditions, and operational factors, and can be significantly more expensive than standard flights.

For individual travellers, shared helicopter seats may sometimes be available at a lower cost. Larger groups generally require private helicopter charters, which can help minimise disruption and keep the group travelling together.

Our team works closely with airlines and helicopter operators to assist with alternative arrangements whenever possible. However, all flights and transfers remain weather dependent.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Travel in the Himalayas requires patience and flexibility. Weather conditions, flight schedules, and mountain logistics can change quickly, and delays are considered a normal part of trekking in Nepal.

While every effort is made to operate trips according to schedule, PJS Adventures cannot accept responsibility for delays, cancellations, or itinerary changes caused by weather conditions, airline operations, or other circumstances beyond our control.

PJS Challenges takes no responsibility for flight delays, cancellations or extra flight charges around the Himalaya region.

PJS Challenges will organise and pay airline/helicopter companies on behalf of clients. Clients are liable for reimbursement to PJS Challenges for any additional flight charges outside of our original included transfers. Any delays, cancellation or extra flight charges claims should be directed to your trip insurance provider.
