Rwenzori Mountains Trekking Adventure
Explore Africa’s legendary “Mountains of the Moon” on a breathtaking journey through remote valleys, glaciers, rainforest, and alpine wilderness.
The Rwenzori Mountains, often referred to as the legendary “Mountains of the Moon,” are one of Africa’s most unique and spectacular trekking destinations. Located along the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this remote mountain range forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to some of the continent’s most dramatic and diverse landscapes.
Unlike many other African mountain ranges, the Rwenzoris combine lush rainforest, bamboo forests, giant lobelia and groundsel zones, alpine valleys, glaciers, lakes, and snow-capped peaks into a single trekking experience. The range stretches approximately 120 kilometres and includes Mount Stanley, whose highest point - Margherita Peak - stands at 5,109 metres, making it the third-highest mountain in Africa.
Historically, the Rwenzoris were believed by ancient geographers to be the source of the Nile River, adding to the mystery and allure surrounding the region. Today, they remain one of the least explored and most rewarding mountain regions in Africa, offering a true wilderness experience far from the crowds.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE & EXPERIENCE
The Rwenzori Mountains offer one of the most diverse trekking environments in the world. Trails lead through dense tropical rainforest, bamboo forests, giant lobelia and groundsel zones, alpine valleys, glaciers, and rocky high mountain terrain.
As you ascend through the range, the landscapes change dramatically each day, creating an almost otherworldly trekking experience. Lower slopes are rich with birdlife, waterfalls, and thick vegetation, while the upper regions reveal dramatic valleys, glacial lakes, and snow-covered peaks.
The Rwenzoris are also home to unique plant and animal life found nowhere else on Earth. The giant groundsels and lobelias that dominate the alpine zones are among the most iconic features of the range and give the mountains their distinctive appearance.
For those attempting Margherita Peak, the journey becomes increasingly alpine and technical near the summit, involving glacier travel and scrambling in high-altitude conditions.

FITNESS LEVEL & CLIMBING CHALLENGE
The Rwenzori Mountains are considered one of the most challenging trekking experiences in Africa and require a good level of fitness and endurance. Due to the combination of altitude, steep terrain, high rainfall, and the constant ascents and descents throughout the range, prior hiking experience is strongly recommended.
Trekkers should be prepared for long days on rugged and often muddy mountain trails, with changing weather conditions and remote wilderness terrain adding to the challenge. The climb is physically demanding, particularly for those without previous trekking or mountain experience.
For climbers attempting Margherita Peak, the final ascent becomes increasingly technical and alpine in nature. Sections of glacier travel and steep ice may require the use of crampons, ropes, ascenders, descenders, and ice axes. While previous mountaineering experience is helpful, our guides are fully trained in ice climbing and mountain rescue and can assist climbers with limited technical experience.
However, participants should be prepared to learn and actively use equipment during the expedition, including fitting crampons and using basic climbing systems safely on the mountain.
The Rwenzoris are demanding, remote, and often unpredictable - but for those willing to take on the challenge, they offer one of the most rewarding and unique mountain adventures in the world.
