WHAT YOU WILL SEE & EXPERIENCE

Running the Kilimanjaro Marathon is about far more than crossing a finish line - it's about experiencing Tanzania at its very best.

The race takes place in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, following scenic roads through Moshi, traditional villages, banana and coffee plantations, small farms, and beautiful forest sections. Throughout the course, local communities line the roads to cheer on runners, creating an atmosphere that is both energetic and uniquely Tanzanian.

The gradual climb towards Mweka rewards runners with spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, while the fast downhill finish back into Moshi Stadium is accompanied by music, celebrations, and enthusiastic crowds.

Race weekend itself is a festival, with thousands of runners from around the world gathering to celebrate sport,

community, and adventure. After crossing the finish line, many participants choose to continue their Tanzanian journey with a safari in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, or other day trip options around Tanzania.

Half Marathon - 21.1km

Half Marathon Profile.png

The race begins at Moshi Stadium, where thousands of runners set off to the cheers of enthusiastic spectators. The route initially heads through the town of Moshi before joining the main road towards Dar es Salaam for approximately 8–9km. This opening section is relatively flat, allowing runners to settle into their pace while enjoying the lively support from local communities lining the route.

The course then turns back towards Mount Kilimanjaro, where runners begin a long but gradual climb towards Mweka. With spectacular views of the mountain ahead and local villagers cheering every step of the way, this section is both challenging and incredibly inspiring.

From Mweka, the route winds through peaceful forested areas before descending through small farms, traditional villages, banana plantations, and coffee estates. The final kilometres are predominantly downhill, providing a fast and exciting finish back into Moshi Stadium.

Throughout the race, runners are well supported with regular water stations, sponge points, cooling showers, medical support, and excellent race organisation, helping participants stay hydrated and comfortable in the Tanzanian heat.

The Half Marathon follows the same spectacular route for much of the climb towards Mweka before turning back towards the stadium, offering many of the same breathtaking views and incredible atmosphere over a shorter distance.

Whether you're running the full marathon, half marathon, or joining the 5km Fun Run, the finish inside Moshi Stadium is unforgettable. Live music, local entertainment, cheering crowds, food stalls, and a vibrant festival atmosphere create the perfect celebration of your achievement.
