Standing at 4,566 metres, Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and the fifth-highest peak in Africa. Located within Arusha National Park, this spectacular dormant volcano offers one of the continent's most diverse and rewarding mountain climbs.
Often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru is regarded by many experienced trekkers as the more scenic ascent. The route passes through lush rainforest, open heathland, dramatic volcanic ridges, and alpine terrain while providing outstanding opportunities to encounter wildlife such as giraffe, buffalo, zebra, colobus monkeys, baboons, and antelope.
Mount Meru is also one of the best acclimatisation climbs for those planning to summit Kilimanjaro, although it should not be underestimated. Its narrow crater rim, exposed ridges, and volcanic landscapes create a challenging and exciting mountain adventure in its own right.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE & EXPERIENCE
Mount Meru offers one of the most varied mountain environments in East Africa. Beginning within Arusha National Park, the trek climbs through lush montane rainforest where wildlife sightings are common. Unlike most mountain climbs, it's not unusual to encounter giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthogs, baboons, colobus monkeys, and antelope during the first day's ascent, accompanied by an armed park ranger for safety.
As you gain altitude, the scenery changes dramatically. Dense forest gives way to giant heather, open moorland, volcanic ash slopes, and rugged alpine terrain, each ecological zone revealing a different side of the mountain. Along the way you'll enjoy spectacular views of the impressive Meru Crater, the Ash Cone, and Little Meru, while on clear days Mount Kilimanjaro dominates the eastern horizon.
The highlight of the expedition is the pre-dawn summit ascent to Socialist Peak (4,566m). Following the narrow crater rim, you'll pass Rhino Point before reaching the summit just as the sun rises over East Africa. From the top, breathtaking panoramic views stretch across Arusha National Park, the Great Rift Valley, and towards the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro.
Combining exceptional scenery, remarkable wildlife, and a rewarding summit, Mount Meru is one of Africa's most underrated mountain adventures.
THE CLIMBING CHALLENGE
Although often used as preparation for Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a demanding mountain climb that deserves respect.
The trek involves several consecutive days of hiking with significant elevation gain, culminating in a long summit day of approximately 12–14 hours. The final ascent follows an exposed crater ridge with steep volcanic terrain and sections where a good head for heights is beneficial.
No technical climbing experience is required, but participants should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable trekking at altitude. The gradual ascent profile provides excellent acclimatisation, making Meru an ideal objective both as a standalone adventure and as preparation for higher peaks.
